On a serene Sunday, September 18, 2016, as the fall season painted Keswick with vibrant colors, the sun's warm embrace brought a sense of calmness to the air. However, this tranquility was soon shattered when my phone rang just after sunset, delivering the most devastating news of my life.

On the other end of the line, a voice urged me to rush to the UVA medical center. My heart sank as I learned that my beloved son, Rajesh Alante Gatewood, had been struck by not one but two cars. In less than 12 hours from that harrowing call, I had to face the unthinkable - I lost my first-born.

The grief and pain of losing Rajesh are beyond words, leaving an irreplaceable void in my life, and profoundly impacting his two brothers and our entire family. Amidst the anguish, I have come to realize that Rajesh was a blessing - a heavenly angel sent into our lives. Though I seek answers, I find solace in the treasured memories of his infectious laughter and boundless spirit that continue to resonate within me.

Rajesh's vibrant and loving nature always drew him close to family and friends. He relished playing kickball during joyful family gatherings and with his beloved friends. To honor his memory and carry forward his legacy of compassion, I made a heartfelt decision to establish an annual scholarship outreach program, dedicated to empowering the youth in Charlottesville and surrounding areas.
